Victory at home in Round 1 of playoffs

It had been more than two weeks since the Cyclones faced an opponent, so tensions were high as they started the first round of the NJCAA Region 4 playoffs. Moraine Valley came out charging, however, getting an early leg up over Elgin Community College and earning the 2-1 win at home to advance.

Starting with momentum on their side, the Cyclones blocked the Spartans' offense and went up 1-0 after Heather Canny found the net with an assist from Taylor London. The lead only lasted five minutes into the second half after the Spartans got one in the net. But the Cyclones continued to push. Seven minutes later, Heather Canny had a free kick that bounced off one of the Elgin players and into the net to put Moraine Valley up 2-1.

The rest of the game saw Elgin fight back and come close to scoring, but the Cyclones defense, especially keeper Ana Perez, was there to stop any chances. She had nine saves in this game.

"Overall, it was a great performance from the entire team. The bench was very supportive and professional as well," said Head Coach Javier Roman. "This was a very exciting game throughout the 90 minutes."

The Cyclones face Black Hawk College on Sunday, Nov. 2, noon, in Moline, for round 2 of the playoffs.
