A slippery, snowy 5K course was no match for the Cyclones as they raced to a 25th place finish out of 44 teams at the NJCAA Division II Cross Country Championship in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
By the time this race began, six other races had roughed up the course, making it a muddy and slick mess, yet the Cyclones pushed through, yielding an All-American.
As she has all season, freshman Eva Zimmerman led the Cyclones, crossing the line in 39th place out of 321 runners in 20:42. With that time, she earned an NJCAA Coaches Association All-American honor given to the top 15% of, or top 49, finishers. She joins just two other Cyclones who have earned that designation.
"Going into the meet, we knew Eva had a shot at being All-American, and that goal wasn't going to change. In fact, the course conditions put her in a better spot than most because she enjoys that kind of stuff," said Head Coach Dimitri Dimizas, who was named U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NJCAA Division II Cross Country Women's Coach of the Year in the Midwest Region. "I saw her come by around the 2K mark, and she was in a pack of about 10 women around 50th place, so she couldn't let up, and she didn't."
Coming in after Zimmerman was Mia Villa in 120th place in 21:19 followed by Fernanda Cabrera (155th place, 23:07), Rylee Milenkovic (197th place, 23:55), Desiree Mendoza (226th place, 24:39) and Guadalupe Marquez (300th place, 27:30).
"We had a goal of finishing in the top 25 as a team, and the women did just that. Having a front runner is nice, but having a pack of strong runners behind her is what is needed for a team to be successful. They've been strong and tough all season and continued that throughout the final meet," Dimizas added. "Rylee, Mia and Des are one of the most accomplished trios we've ever had. Fernanda and Lupita were an amazing addition to the roster and once again proved their worth. I'm honored to say I was their coach."
