College of Lake County has been a dominant basketball force the last couple of years, but the Cyclones put a damper on that thanks to a strong third quarter in their 96-72 victory. Moraine Valley is 4-0 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference.
It took a few minutes in the first quarter for the Cyclones to warm up, as the Lancers scored first and led 5-7. However, Shakila Brownlow sunk two free throws and a three-pointer to give her team a lead that they never relinquished.
The Lancers were never far behind the Cyclones throughout the first half, but Moraine Valley had a string of short runs and free throws that kept them ahead. Both teams moved the ball quickly, but the Cyclones defense held the Lancers back while holding a 47-40 lead at halftime.
The third quarter proved to be more challenging for the Cyclones as the Lancers went on a handful of their own scoring runs to get within three. However, the Cyclones never backed down and continued to push. The fourth quarter was their strongest as they scored 32 points and held the Lancers to 11. In that quarter alone, Isabel Lopez sunk two threes and Jadea Johnson scored eight points while Lily Hernandez collected six.
Johnson collected 23 points tonight followed by Brownlow with 16, Laila Houseworth with 15, Trajany Walker with 13 and Hernandez rounding it out with 11.
