Cyclones best Chargers in final minutes of region semifinals; headed to region finals

Getting into the NJCAA Region 4 finals was anything but easy. The Cyclones had to face Carl Sandburg College in the Region 4 semifinals, and they made it a challenge. However, Moraine Valley prevailed in the end thanks to some free throws and well-timed steals.

The Chargers jumped ahead first as the Cyclones' shots failed to land unlike they usually do. With a few possessions and a 7-0 run, Moraine Valley took a narrow lead and went on one more before the first quarter ended, going ahead 23-17. The second quarter was the toughest for the Cyclones as they scored just 11 points and saw the Chargers get within one point at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Chargers take a narrow lead and trade it three times with the Cyclones. A number of missed free throws hurt Moraine Valley as they then trailed 48-47. The Chargers continued to lead early in the final quarter. Added pressure on both ends plus three clutch free throws from Lily Hernandez in the final seconds and a steal from Shakila Brownlow to stop the Chargers from scoring, gave the Cyclones a berth to region finals after the 62-60 victory at the buzzer.

Not only was this a fight to the end, but it was the Cyclones' lowest scoring game of the season. Jadea Johnson led the offense with 26 points along with nine rebounds and three steals. Laila Houseworth added 13 points and five assists while Brownlow collected 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Trajany Walker also had nine rebounds.

The Cyclones face Kankakee Community College in the NJCAA Region 4 Finals on Saturday, March 7, 5 p.m., at Rock Valley College. Whichever team wins this matchup will compete at the national tournament in North Carolina.
