The Cyclones were crowned Region 4 champs once again after a contentious 72-60 victory over Kankakee Community College in the region finals.
This was not a guaranteed win for the Cyclones, as the Cavaliers posed a threat in this high-stakes matchup. Halfway into the first quarter, the pressure from Kankakee allowed them to go on a 15-0 run to put the Cyclones down 19-11. The Cyclones, however, regained their composure in the second quarter, slowly building up their offense and halting the Cavaliers, eventually tying the score at 27 in the final seconds. Jadea Johnson's free throw put her team up 30-29 at halftime.
Missed free throws stunted the Cyclones' ability to build a lead but a few key baskets combined with missed shots by the Cavaliers allowed Moraine Valley to narrowly stay ahead 50-45.
With mounting pressure in the final 10 minutes of the game, the Cavaliers put on the defensive force again, throwing off the Cyclones' scoring prowess. Less than three minutes left in the game, Kankakee had gotten within one before the Cyclones turned it up. Johnson, Laila Houseworth and Shakila Brownlow went on a scoring tear while Kankakee missed shots for the Cyclones victory and region championship. This is the fifth region championship for Moraine Valley.
Houseworth and Johnson each finished with 18 points. Houseworth also had six steals. Mikayla Summey had a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Brownlow added 11 points. Under the basket, Trajany Walker grabbed nine boards.
The Cyclones head to the NJCAA Division II Championship in Hickory, North Carolina, starting March 16.
